What Is a High-Velocity HVAC System?

High-velocity HVAC systems are similar to traditional HVAC systems in that they heat or cool air using a heat pump or compressor and then distribute the air into a home’s living areas. The biggest difference is how the air is distributed in a high-velocity system. Instead of using traditional ductwork, high-velocity HVAC systems use tubes that are about 2 inches in diameter. The vents are also smaller – about 5 inches in diameter compared to traditional vents that are about 6 inches tall and 12 inches wide.

With a high-velocity unit, conditioned air moves from the condenser or heat pump to a high-velocity air handler that uses more pressure to push the air through the tubes and out the vents. This means your home will reach the set temperature much quicker than a traditional HVAC system.

Because air is pushed through the unit faster, your system will run less often and use less fuel, which will save you money on your monthly energy bills.

The Benefits of a High-Velocity HVAC System

Installing a high-velocity HVAC system in your home comes with a number of benefits, including:

Easy Installation

Since the tubes are only 2 inches in diameter, they are much easier to install than standard 8-inch ducts. These miniature ducts are also very flexible and can be installed inside walls, below floors, in attics, closets, as well as other tight spaces.

More Efficient Cooling

A high-velocity system is very efficient at heating and cooling your home in a short period of time. You’ll be surprised at how quickly the system reaches the temperature you set on your thermostat. Because the system runs less, you can save a significant amount of money on your monthly energy bills.

Excellent Humidity Control

You’ll notice a better balance of indoor humidity levels with a high-velocity system when compared to other HVAC systems. This is because high-velocity systems remove about 30% more moisture. This impact in humidity helps make your home much more comfortable during the summer.

Better Aesthetics

Many people don’t like the way window air conditioning units take up space and block their view. Units, even wall mounted mini splits are hard to decorate around and are intrusive. High-velocity vents are small and easier to hide from sight. They keep your home comfortable without drawing attention.

Quieter Operation

The tubes that come with high-velocity HVAC systems are actually insulated to reduce noise, making them quieter than low-velocity heating and cooling systems and window AC units.
